Medeama SC has become the first Ghanaian side to reach the group stages of the CAF Champions League since 2012.

The Mauve and Yellows defeated Guinean giants Horoya AC 4-3 to break an 11-year-old jinx in the competition for Ghanaian sides.

Berekum Chelsea was the last Ghanaian side to qualify for the group stages of the competition in 2012.

Giants Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko have both failed to impress in CAF interclub competitions in recent seasons.

The Tarkwa-based side commenced their 2023/24 campaign after eliminating Nigerian side Remo Stars on penalties following a 3-2 triumph in the second-leg tie after both legs ended 1-1 on aggregate.

Horoya couldn't survive against the Ghanaian side after succumbing to a 3-1 loss in the first-leg tie in Cape Coast.

Saturday's fixture ended 2-1 in favour of the Guineans however, they couldn't secure victory over the Ghanaian.

Medeama joins Egyptian giants Al Ahli, South Africans Sundowns, Pyramids, Young Africans of Tanzania, Jwaneng Galaxy of Botswana, TP Mazembe, Petro Launda, and ES Tunis of Tunisia who have all qualified for the berth.
